Venus Flytrap … Did You Know Day?
August 12, 2022
Did you know It takes longer than a week for a Venus flytrap to digest an insect?
The Dionaea muscipula, or Venus flytrap, is an carnivorous plant that is only native to two states in the United States: South Carolina and North Carolina. Charles Darwin described them as the “most wonderful plant in the world.”
This week at The Commons we had a visit from Richard Jones. Richard is licensed to grow the plants by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture’s endangered species division. He has been studying and growing the plants for more than 30 years and he brought along Venus flytraps for everyone to see up close. We even got to experience the magic of the tickling the trigger hairs with broom straw and watching them close. A big thank you to Richard Jones for spending the afternoon with us and sharing his knowledge!
