Learn How You Can Prevent Elder Abuse

April 26, 2016

Brightmore University Elder AbuseBrightmore University presented “Modern Crimes, Modern Times 2016: Elder Abuse Training with Awareness Walk” last week for the residents of Brightmore of Wilmington and also the Wilmington community.  A free workshop was offered as local and state enforcement agencies presented information that seniors need to know to protect themselves and their money from frauds, scams, cyber-crimes, financial exploitation, elder abuse and more!  Guest speakers included Si Cantwell, Community Editor of the Star News; Detective Brandon Harris from the NHC Sherriff’s Dept.; Wanda Marino, Assistant Dir. of the Dept. of Social Services; Janet Coleman, Assistant District Attorney 5th Judicial District; David Oakley, US Postal Inspector; Caroline Farmer, NC Attorney General’s Office from Raleigh, NC; Michael Nauert, Special Agent FBI; and last but not least, The Honorable Elaine F. Marshall, NC Secretary of State.  The training also included an Elder Abuse & Earth Day Awareness Walk at Brightmore’s Walking Trail that was led by Brightmore’s Activity Director, Lisa Sherrill, and Brightmore’s Wellness Director, Madeline Woodard. The information we received was incredibly important not only for seniors, but people of all ages! You can’t afford not to “be a savvy consumer & fight fraud in a changing world!”
