Brightmore University: Bathing Beauties
July 5, 2016
This week, Brightmore University presented their “Up to Date” series, “Bathing Beauties in Vintage Post Cards, Part 1”: An Illustrated Presentation, presented by Elaine Henson, Wilmington Native & Historical Researcher. Elaine guided us through the years of Bathing Costumes using historical postcards of a bygone era ranging from the late 1800s until the 1940s, illustrating the evolution of swimwear and beach culture. We learned about early Bathing Machines, Athletic-like Tank Suits, Lifelines, which was an early form of life saving, and Seashore Activities popular back in the day. The images present a fun look at how the seashore has been enjoyed over the last 150 years.
