TEAM RED walks for Healthy Hearts…

February 7, 2017

Heart disease is currently the number one killer of women in America, claiming the lives of approximately 500,000 American women annually.  Since the initiation of the National Wear Red Day campaign in 2003 and increased focus on heart disease in women, death in women has decreased more than 30% over the past 10 years.  At Brightmore we strive on education, exercise and highly encourage residents get at least 30 minutes of daily exercise by either attending pool and fitness classes or opting to head out for a brisk walk, a light run, swimming or biking which all in the end helps to prevent heart disease. Brightmore raised awareness of the American Heart Association’s “National Wear Red Day” by encouraging residents to wear red and participate in the Annual Heart Walk.  The day before the walk, “Team Red” met to decorate their walking team t-shirts to show their commitment in wearing red all day long and being a part of our “Heart Walk”, which was held on Friday, February 3rd, around the campus pond.  Even though the weather did not completely cooperate with us, the team braved the 45 degree weather, bundled up and still walked for healthy hearts.  Residents chose to walk at their own pace by walking one lap, two laps, or the full five to complete 1-mile. After the walk, we came back to Brightmore to join the other residents celebrating National Wear Red Day and enjoyed a healthy Yogurt Bar and raffled off the annual “Heart Healthy” Basket.  Brightmore raised $140 toward its own Heart Healthy Activity.   It was definitely a full day but very exciting to be celebrating an event that the whole nation recognizes!
