October is the month to walk to support a Healthy Heart!

November 4, 2019

Brightmore University ended the second semester with a presentation on “Preventing Heart Disease and Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle” presented by Katie Monroe, NP with the Cardiology Division of Wilmington Health. Katie shared tips on preventing heart disease as we age and what we can do to promote a healthy lifestyle. Heart Disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Risk factors for heart disease, some that are completely out of our control, include age, gender, race or ethnicity and family history.

Katie thoroughly discussed the three main areas of heart disease Arrhythmia, an abnormal heart rhythm; Congestive Heart Failure, when your heart is not pumping enough blood for specific areas of the body; and Atrial Fibrillation, a heart rhythm disorder where your heart beats very fast. We discussed the signs, symptoms, risk factors and what we can do to help prevent these heart issues, exercise being the most important. Residents ended the session with questions concerning medications they were taking, new surgeries and treatments they had heard about and making sure their lifestyle was on a healthy track with nutrition questions. With October focusing on Healthy Hearts, we thought one of the most important discussions we could have together is how to keep our hearts as we age as healthy as possible!
