Lifelong Learning through The Great Courses – 3rd Session
Brightmore of Wilmington’s Independent Living retirement community started its third 6-week educational series where residents learn from a Clinical Professor of Neurology, Richard Restak. This week’s college-level video course “Optimizing Brain Fitness,” was specifically on Focusing Your Attention and Enhancing Your Memory. In these two sessions, the residents learned that, “The brain really thrives on getting information and paying attention. The arts, sports, and everyday living all provide opportunities to strengthen attention.” In our technology and social media society, it is very easy to let those devises take your attention away from the task at hand and we lose focus immediately. Multitasking is also one of the biggest impediments to take our attention away from what we are really doing. The class realized that the most important principle for improving your memory is focusing your attention on what you’re trying to learn. Session 4 will be coming up in a few weeks where they will be learning about “Exercising Your Working Memory and Putting Your Senses to Work.” We are halfway through, and in 3 more sessions our class will graduate!
