“It’s Never Too Late to Play…”

April 26, 2017

Braving the torrential rains of the day, the residents of Brightmore retirement community attended the OLLI New Horizons Band Spring Concert last night at Kenan Auditorium. This is a talented group we have been enjoying and supporting for years. The New Horizons Band is a part of the Adult Learning Program OSHER, and its musicians are comprised of community members ages 50 and above. It provides an ensemble experience for adults who play brass, woodwind and percussion instruments and most importantly, those who just “love to play music!”  This concert was an extra special one since the conductor, Dr. John LaCognata (Director of Bands at UNCW) of 7 years, has decided to move on and focus strictly on UNCW Band classes. The director of OSHER, Shelly Morris, gave a beautiful speech thanking him for his true compassion and commitment for Lifelong Learning for the past 7 years. The program for the evening was titled “Seasons” and band played some beautiful pieces which included “The Sounds of Spring,” The Four Seasons,” “Winter Rhapsody,” ”Summer  Resounding,” “Colors of Fall,” “Winter on Emerald Bay,” “In Late November,” “Summertime” and “Into The Joy of Spring.”  After such a gloomy and rainy day, this program left us all leaving with a smile on our face and a song in our heart!
