Come Grow with Us!
March 28, 2017Brightmore University held its last class for the 2017 Spring Semester as we partnered with the Cape Fear Orchid Society. Byron Price and Jim Lanier presented “Big Bloomin’ Orchid Day”: The Cape Fear Orchid Society’s 2017 Growers Day. It was a beautiful event with an array of orchids decorating the hallways. Participants admired all the kinds of orchids decorating the hallways and room while they prepared for a morning of orchid culture. They started their morning out with a delicious breakfast provided by Morrison and then an information session called “Orchids 101”. Participants had the opportunity to purchase new, lovely blooming orchids, from the most common, a Phalaenopsis Orchid to the unique and beautiful Paphiopedilum known as the “Slipper Orchid”, and then learned how to care for them. The Orchidaceae are a diverse and widespread family of flowering plants, with blooms that are often colorful and often fragrant, commonly known as the orchid family and have about 28,000 currently accepted species. The speakers were very well educated on these facts and were growers themselves. One speaker was a past biology professor from UNCW and currently has his orchid farm in the Florida Keys. They both provided information on the easy basic care of orchids in terms we could all understand and answered any questions the audience had.
