Brightmore University presented, “The Big Dig: The History of the Intracoastal Waterways in New Hanover County” presented by Elaine Henson, Wilmington Native and Historical Researcher. Residents and community guests joined Elaine Henson as she spoke on the historical subject that included a very through and beautiful illustrated presentation. In 1926, the US Congress authorized the continuation of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, from Beaufort to the mouth of the Cape Fear River in North Carolina. Completed in 1932, after the planning and vision of William Arthur Snow, this presentation included pictures of its construction, 3,000 miles of island waterways and some of the history and the resulting development of Wilmington, Carolina, and Wrightsville Beaches from the 1920’s to the 1960’s.
