Brightmore University Presents “Parkinson’s Disease: Symptoms, Treatment, and Current Research”

August 29, 2016

Brightmore University invited Dr. Carrie Grear, MD, PhD, NHRMC Physician’s Group-Neurology to speak on her expertise in “Parkinson Disease: Symptoms, Treatment and Current Research.” Dr. Grear provided an in-depth presentation on the many different facets of Parkinson Disease which included identifying the early and late symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, how it is diagnosed and treated.  Parkinson’s is a chronic disease of the nervous system that we all may have seen before in some of the great actors of our time such as Mohammed Ali, Michael J. Fox and just recently, Robin Williams. The first research was conducted in 1917 in London by Dr. James Parkinson. Dr. Grear, with specialties in Neurology & Neuromuscular, also discussed the newest research and clinic trials in the field. Dr. Grear gave us examples of how she currently tests patients to see if they have symptoms and answered several direct questions from current Parkinson patients on our campus. It was a very enlightening presentation which fell right in line with our campuses support for Parkinson’s of the Carolinas. Just recently, we had a Patriotic Concert in Dance and all proceeds went to this organization to help fund the exercise program for local Parkinson patients at the Senior Center. Brightmore of Wilmington campus raised $2,200 to help this program continue to work with our community. There are also several support groups in Wilmington for Parkinson’s and one is right here on our campus.
