With 66 apartment homes, The Kempton provides a secure, cozy residence and family-like atmosphere while embracing an independent lifestyle. Each of our floor plans allow for your personal furniture, pictures, and decorating touches to be added, truly making The Kempton your home. Three delectable, restaurant-style meals served in our dining room, on site beauty and barber shop, laundry facilities, library and living room, private dining room, casual cafe seating, as well as a community kitchen and sun room all combine to make The Kempton the premier assisted living in Wilmington.
The Kempton is proud of its reputation for treating each individual with the utmost respect for privacy and dignity. Designed for individuals who may need assistance with certain everyday activities, but don’t require continued medical services, The Kempton combines a safe, cohesive community, personalized support services, and devoted care team available 24 hours to administer medications and assisted care, bridging the gap between self-reliance and supportive living.
We also emphasize that assisted living should not be confused with inactive living, as our residents enjoy a full social calendar with opportunities to expand the mind, nurture the spirit, and exercise the body.
The Commons – Personal Care
The Commons provides personal care 24 hours a day to our residents by trained, professional and caring staff. Our staff also promotes a special relationship between staff, family, and members of the community. This relationship called “Partners in Caring” is a close working association designed to help residents live full, enriching and dignified lives.
The Commons appreciates that not everyone seeking some degree of personal care requires intense medical management or has cognitive impairment. In fact, may require little more than a supportive environment and the reassuring feeling that comes from knowing someone is always there. Residents and their families appreciate the security and comfort of being a part of a socially stimulating and fulfilling extended family. This is an environment where residents can make new friends, go out to dinner, participate with activities and outing, or host visitors and family members in a warm residential setting.
Personalized care plans are the approach we take when caring for our residents at The Commons. In order to serve a resident’s best interests, our first priority is to develop a truly personalized assessment and care plan since needs vary by individual. We recognize the significant difference family support can make in a resident’s well being and encourage family members to join us for activities, outings and meals.
Memory Care at Paraklay Way
Our Memory Care wing called Paraklay Way at The Commons underscores the Greek word ‘Paraklay’, meaning “encouragement, help, and comfort.” Control and autonomy are critical to self-esteem and a feeling of empowerment. Thus, our open architectural design avoids narrow, confusing hallways that often lead to agitation and anxiety. Instead, our therapeutic layout affords a sense of control and predictability, improves orientation, plus supports meaningful connections.
In Paraklay Way we proudly promote the “Best Friends Approach to Alzheimer’s Care.” Developed by Virginia Bell and David Troxil, this philosophy instills a nurturing environment with a focus on individuality, reassurance, and the ability to enjoy life on one’s own terms.
Family and friends are also encouraged to be a part of our “Partners in Caring” team. With our professionally trained and supportive staff, coupled with person-centered care plans, residents can experience the best quality of life possible. Each aspect of the program is designed to maximize a resident’s sense of well-being, value, and capabilities.
Empathy Meets Education
Empathizing with the struggles relating to memory loss is only part of the Paraklay Way program. A healthy approach to memory care relies on family support, involvement, and understanding every stage of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. We help educate families on the symptoms and changes relating to the disease, assure a staff highly skilled in memory care and the latest treatments, and value each resident’s rights and dignity. To provide further support to our families and families in the community facing the same challenges, we host a monthly Family Caregiver Support Group, often bringing in specialists who can provide a better understanding of the different aspects of caring for a loved one.
